Meet the Farmers and Producers

All the following farms are available for a farm visit with Cynthia.  Farmers will be chosen based on their proximity and availability of your menu ingredients.

Vicki’s Veggiesis rooted in the traditions of a small family farm. Just a stone’s throw away from Black River Cheese, owner’s Vicki Emlaw and Tim Noxon produce a surprising variety of organically grown vegetables on seven acres of Black Creek’s finest soils. Heirloom varieties, custom compost and plenty of hard work coax the terroir out of the land and into these vegetables. Over 200 varieties of heirloom tomatoes, 50 types of lettuce, spinach, baby carrots, beets, garlic and much more. From their roadside stand to markets and restaurants in Toronto, these vegetables create lasting impressions.

Thyme Again Gardens is a diverse 115-acre certified organic farm in the quaint community of Carrying Place, Since 1997 they have been working towards creating a sustainable family farm operation, including growing and grinding there own grains for animal feed, harvesting renewable energy sources to meet electrical and heating needs, and planting and harvesting fruits and vegetables in accordance with biodynamic principles. They raise heritage breeds of beef cattle, chickens, pigs and sheep for food, as well as for the sheer joy of their companionship. They also manage a beautiful one- acre market garden featuring heritage tomatoes, peppers, beans, cucumbers, oriental greens, and many other unique vegetables, grown largely from seeds harvested from the previous year’s crops.

Owners Lorraine Schmid and Lori Aselstine also welcome you to join them overnight at their Bed and Breakfast.

Laundry Farms – Terry has farmed all his life in the County. He bought his father’s farm and today he and Jean now work 400 plus acres together. Their roadside stand on County Road 1, just outside Picton is a glorious sight, especially in the autumn, with apples, squash, pumpkins and gourds, peppers and corn. In summer, it’s pick your own strawberries, and a wonderful selection of fresh produce and sweet corn available everyday. Jean enjoys working with our local chefs supplying them with great fruit and vegetables.

Honey Wagon Farms – Retired seniors Sandi and Ed Taylor own a small, friendly, farm-gate operation located just outside the town of Picton. They were drawn to market gardening because of their love of working alongside Mother Nature and their enjoyment in meeting and chatting with folks old and new. They farm without the use of herbicides, fungicides or pesticides and amend their soil with commercial fertilizer and green manure. They introduce specialty veggies in response to suggestions of chefs and customers alike. Their vegetables are a staple of fine dining in County and Kingston restaurants and can also be found at the farm gate and on Saturdays at their Kingston Market stall. The Taylors also have a small maple syrup operation following the time- honored tradition of their forefathers. They gather sap in buckets, boil on an open wood fired evaporator and filter through felt.

Andrew from Cherryvale FarmsCherryvale Organic Farm - In 2007, Cherryvale Organic Farm purchased the property from the Moore’s; continuing to maintain and improve the integrity of the land as certified organic. They grow everything from potatoes, leeks and beets to salad greens, radish and tomatoes.  They also have Buckwheat, Rye and Spelt flour milled from the grain grown in their fields.  Their current endeavour is fruit trees, shrubs and vines.  They plan to have many new types and varieties available in the next couple of years.  This year, they will have black raspberries and black berries available in the summer.

Cherryvale Organic Farm intends to be the ‘farm of the future’: local, organic, sustainable. Their aim is to farm with the smallest possible ecological footprint in a world that must cope with climate change, peak oil, and scarce natural resources

Back 40 Veg – Back 40 Veg is a family business run by kids on a 117-acre loyalist farm on the beautiful almost-island of Prince Edward County in Ontario. Their farm is home to a variety of field crops, a re-generating woodlot, and an organically-tended, pesticide-free market garden featuring many varieties of heirloom vegetables, flowers and berries. The field crops go to Blaine Way Farm, which raises Tamworth Pigs. The market garden supplies several fine local restaurants and businesses, and a group of loyal customers in Toronto’s Annex neighbourhood. Vicki Emlaw and Tim Noxon of Vicki’s Veggies have been their mentors and they purchase all our heirloom seedlings from their award-winning farm on Morrison Point Road. Back 40 Veg are proud supporters of Slow Food The County and follow the Slow Food principles of growing good, clean and fair food on our farm.
